Constable Terry Rayner is being recognized tonight for his amazing contributions to the community. Whether it’s running a golf tournament with more than 350 golfers and 50 volunteers, or organizing the donation of 10 iPods to help with a learning program at a school, Terry can be found behind several community initiatives.

Growing up in south Oshawa influenced Terry’s life when it came to his career and his desire to give back to the community. His parents were instrumental in showing both him, and his brother, the importance of engaging with their community. Terry’s mom ran various community programs and his dad coached several sports teams so they could ensure that kids everywhere could participate, regardless of their financial status.
Terry brings that same dedication to his various youth programs. He has arranged the donation of iPods for Glen Street Public School for their Comprehensive Learning Program, guitars for Lakewoods Public School and reading kits for Dr. C F Cannon Public School; all of these schools are in Terry’s old neighbourhood.

Terry also moonlights as a Massage Therapist for the Toronto Rock Lacrosse Team. Through his connections with the team, members of the Toronto Rock joined him as they visited eight schools across the region to talk about teamwork and leadership. They even left lacrosse sticks behind so the students could continue to hone their skills. Taking the lacrosse program one step further, Terry received funding from this event to take 160 kids to see the Toronto Rock play.

And in 2010, Terry wanted to show his respect to those officers who have been killed in the line of duty by starting the Ontario Police Memorial Golf Tournament. He reached out to a friend at Tim Hortons, and together, they have co-chaired the event for the past four years, raising more than $115,000 for the memorial.
